As mentioned before my name is Katie Komar, if you’re a good friend of mine from college you probably call me Kiko, but that’s another story. I have managed to make it to the ripe old age of 24 thus far in this crazy life of mine. I like to think of myself as being born and raised a Jersey girl even though most of my young adult life was spent in Pennsylvania. It’s hard to pin point one location since most of my developmental childhood years was spent moving from one location to another between New Jersey and Pennsylvania due to my father’s job. I am the youngest and sole daughter of a hardworking vehicle service department manager and a dental office supervisor. I have one brother who may be 18 months older than me, but we’re about as close as twins as you can possibly be without actually being twins. Shortly after I became an EMT, he decided to give the field a try. He is currently enrolled in the Fall 2018 Online Blended Course Emergency Medical Technician certification program at Harrisburg Area Community College or at least he was at the start of this venture. I have had Siberian huskies as pets all of my life until about four years ago, but once I get my schedule in order you can bet that I’ll have a fur baby of my own running about.
I graduated from Central York High School in the Spring of 2012 and immediately enrolled into college classes December of that same year as an undeclared major. At the end of my high school career I was set on pursuing a degree in graphic design, however after the lack of challenges and a few select conversations with my father I decided to pursue a science degree. I graduated from York College or Pennsylvania with my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a pre-medical focus in December of 2016. My minor under that degree is psychology. During my college years I worked at Kohl’s, one of the few successful department stores left in this digital world, up until I tore my anterior cruciate ligament at Ski Round Top. Also another story for a different time. Soon after, one of my professor’s suggested that I should become a peer chemistry tutor which I continued to do until I graduated from college. The day after my graduation, I started working as a receptionist for a family owned dental office in Etters, Pennsylvania. Not what I was passionate about, not that I knew what exactly that was, but I needed a job and they needed help. After six months, starting with no experience in either insurance or management, I was promoted the front office supervisor. I stayed in that office for a little more than a year and a half before leaving to become a Rehabilitation Medicine Technician at WellSpan York Hospital near my house, which is a fancy title for someone who assists a therapist with treatments. The day prior to starting my Rehab Tech job I started my EMT certification class at Harrisburg Area Community College in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I stayed employed at the hospital during my certification process and left soon after getting my first Emergency Medical Technician job in November 2018. With the way that scheduling works in this field, I actually managed to pick up a second Emergency Medical Technician job which I just started in December of 2018.
Other than my professional and familial life, I enjoy long walks on the beach, sipping on fine liquors, and I am an avid Star Wars fan. I’ve been across the country to go to Star Wars celebrations which are basically a smaller more focused Comic Con. I’ll actually be attending the one in April 2019 out in Chicago. I’ve had that ticket purchased for roughly a year and a half now. I am a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey fan as well. I went to my first live game at the PPG Paints Arena on December 1st, 2018 and had a blast in the city since it was my first time in the city of Pittsburgh (Land of the Bridges). I also find time to exercise my creative side through writing and drawing whenever I can. I am absolutely terrible at sitting down and doing nothing, so you can usually find me out on an adventure with friends or family. I frequent the Harrisburg, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh areas with the hope of putting some stamps in my passport in the upcoming 2019 year. I’m one of those people who would rather live life then spend time sitting on the couch scrolling through social media watching other people live theirs. So I try to live by the motto of trying something at least once so I never have to look back and wonder what if.
“Sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery, and I promise you something great will come of it”. -Benjamin Mee (We Bought a Zoo)
